World bank & jeevika partner with Cropin for farm digitization and advisory enablement
To enhance agricultural productivity and empower women farmers in Bihar, the World Bank-backed Bihar Rural Livelihoods Project (Jeevika) joined hands with Cropin. The goal: enable data-driven farming practices across thousands of women-led producer groups through scalable, tech-enabled solutions.
Client background
Jeevika, supported by the World Bank, is an initiative by the Bihar Rural Livelihoods Promotion Society (BRLPS). The program focuses on empowering rural women by promoting sustainable livelihoods through community-driven institutions, especially in agriculture and allied sectors.
The challenge
The project aimed to address systemic issues that restricted rural productivity:
- Lack of digitized farm records and visibility into on-ground activities
- Limited access to localized agronomic advisories
- Difficulty in monitoring scattered farms and smallholder groups
- Need to train and onboard field personnel with limited tech familiarity
- A scalable method for reaching thousands of women-led SHGs across Bihar
A robust platform was needed to unify data collection, advisory dissemination, and impact measurement.
The solution
Cropin implemented a digital intelligence system using SmartFarm, customized to local needs:
- Digitization of farms and onboarding of women farmers across 12 districts
- Delivery of localized crop advisories via mobile and field agents
- Enabled remote monitoring with satellite and AI-based crop health insights
- Training of community mobilizers and Krishi Sakhis on digital tools
- Centralized dashboards to track adoption, impact, and intervention needs
The platform’s offline-first design ensured smooth functioning in low-connectivity zones.
Impact
- Over 10,000 women farmers benefitted through enhanced knowledge and productivity
- Strengthened capacity-building and tech adoption among grassroots staff
- Improved crop planning, pest management, and decision-making
- Boosted transparency and accountability in scheme implementation
- Set a digital benchmark for women-led agricultural transformation in Bihar
The program highlighted how digital innovation can bridge gaps in rural ecosystems, especially for women in agriculture.
